What's Shaking in the Duck Pond?

Ducks will make you laugh (and cry).  They are sheer joy, and sheer hard work that doesn’t let up whether it’s 99 degrees outside, or 9.

The utter joy is worth it.  When Ken cleans the pond, he locks the duckies out of that part of the enclosure with a small pen fence.  They mill around, quack loudly and generally complain.  Always with their side-eye pointed to the pond.

When he FINALLY opens the pen fence, they rush (waddle) in a ducky conga line and tumble into the pond.  The next site you see is 3 or 4 ducky rear ends up in the air, heads under water and feet paddling madly in sheer joy.

They love their pond.  We have a Playschool slide to install in the summer, and we are saving to purchase a DUCKY CAM!

Building The Pond Part 1

The plan began by terracing the yard.

Terracing the yard on its steep slope is a challenge.  Ken cut into the slope and terraced out the dirt that was cut away.  Then he built retaining walls above and below the cutouts.

The second terrace is the duck pond and duck enclosure.

It’s like building the world’s biggest staircase.

Then the greenhouse super structure, followed by purchase and installation of solar power then water catchment.  All of these things work together  An example is how water catchment and containment will be distributed to the duck pond, whose used water (think fertilizer) will then be distributed through a network of underground pipes to both the greenhouse and the terrace gardens where we will have melon patches and plants beneficial to the ducks , like yarrow and chamomille.

We’re Ken & Linda

This is where we share what’s working, what flopped, and what we’re learning along the way. From backyard duck drama to solar wiring mishaps, it’s all part of the story. We believe in figuring things out as you go—with dirt under your nails and coffee in hand. Pull up a chair and dig in.
